Steptoe & Johnson LLP, a Washington, DC-based Am Law 100 law firm, is seeking a Business Analytics Specialist. This position may be based in any of the firm’s U.S. offices: Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, or Washington, DC, with a preference for Washington, DC. The Business Analytics Specialist will be responsible for assisting the Client Value team, lawyers, business professionals, and clients with information, integrated reports, and bespoke dashboards that allow for the successful and efficient management of clients and matters. As a member of the client value team, this individual will have a particular focus on data analysis and collaboration. This position will work collaboratively with our Finance, IT, Research, and Business Development Teams and will report to the Chief Client Value Officer.

Responsibilities
  • Create scripts to ingest structured data from disparate systems across the Firm
  • Analyze data and build models to identify trends, project impact of rate discounts, realization, pricing arrangements, budget variances, staffing models to improve client/matter profitability
  • Design targeted reports and dynamic dashboards to effectively manage matters, alternative arrangements for firm leadership, lawyers, business professionals as well as clients
  • Maintain business intelligence and project management applications for the client value team and identifies new reporting and analytics needs
  • Identify opportunities to streamline existing processes through process improvement and/or leveraging automation
  • Assist with running queries, tables, databases and new forms for rate and other billing-related processes, coordinating with IT for set-up and support; assist in the design of queries and reports for ad-hoc requests not contained in pre-fabricated queries
  • Participate in demos and development of new Firm software
  • Partner with business and technical teams on data integration projects on behalf of the Client Value team
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree required preferably in Finance, Computer Science, Economics, Statistics, Applied Math, Information Systems or a related area.
  • Three to five years working in a law firm or professional services firm, preferably in areas related to pricing finance, data analytics, and/or business intelligence.
Success Factors
  • Advanced computer skills, proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite; PowerBI; SQL and Python; experience with database tools and financial reporting tools a plus
  • Ability to write scripts
  • High level of proficiency in financial modeling and sophisticated skills in manipulating data
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills with the ability to synthesize multiple pieces of information clearly and concisely as well as draw insights from data
  • Ability to understand and apply advanced statistical and mathematical concepts
  • Outstanding client service skills and responsiveness
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to ensure accuracy of system data
  • Ability to interact with all levels of the organization, employing a high degree of tact, diplomacy, and professionalism
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
  • Ability to prioritize, juggle multiple tasks, and work in a fast-paced environment
  • Must exhibit a high sense of urgency
  • Must be team-oriented
  • Must have a strong work ethic and the ability to work nights and weekends as necessary
  • Experience working with Elite 3E or Elite Enterprise a plus

The anticipated base salary for this position is $90,000 to $120,000. The actual base salary offered will be dependent upon the applicant’s experience and qualifications, as well as other job-related factors, including but not limited to, relevant skills, education, certifications or other professional licenses held, and if applicable, geographic location.
