Steptoe & Johnson LLP, a Washington, DC-based Am Law 100 law firm, is seeking a Business Development Assistant to join its Marketing & Business Development Department. The Business Development Assistant supports and works directly with the Senior Manager, Business Development and team to execute and deliver on internal and external marketing and business development initiatives for the Litigation and Chemicals / Life Sciences groups. The BD Assistant also supports other business development and firm wide initiatives, as needed.
Essential Functions
Steptoe & Johnson LLP, a Washington, DC-based Am Law 100 law firm, is seeking a Business Development Assistant to join its Marketing & Business Development Department. The Business Development Assistant supports and works directly with the Senior Manager, Business Development and team to execute and deliver on internal and external marketing and business development initiatives for the Litigation and Chemicals / Life Sciences groups. The BD Assistant also supports other business development and firm wide initiatives, as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
Essential Functions
- Supports the Senior Business Development Manager and team with business development activities, as well as operational and management projects.
- Helps draft, proof, and assemble pitch materials, information packets, proposals and RFP responses.
- Owns the process of updating and maintaining all practice-specific marketing materials, including attorney bios, practice descriptions, brochures, experience lists, and other website content.
- Conducts research on clients/prospects, industries, competitors, organizations and conferences in connection with client meetings, RFPs/proposals, market analyses, marketing/sponsorship opportunities, and other business development efforts.
- Assists BD team to prepare submissions for key directory rankings (including Chambers and Legal 500).
- Prepares materials for, maintains overall schedules and participates in practice group meetings.
- Proficient in creating business presentations with such tools as PowerPoint or Prezi
- Assists BD team to respond to internal requests for practice group marketing materials, attorney bios and photos, new business proposals, and other marketing and business development-related assistance.
- Maintains and updates the Experience Tracker, including matter tracking, approval of matter descriptions, data input, and generally maintaining the integrity of the data for assigned practice groups.
- Works with Business Development and Events & Communications team to plan client seminars, webinars, programs, and similar activities and drive follow-up efforts to achieve positive results.
- Assists BD and Marketing team to prepare internal and external communications related to assigned practices for the website.
- Perform other duties as assigned within business development and marketing
- Strong client service mentality and a proactive approach.Excellent organizational, interpersonal relations, written and oral communication skills required
- High level of attention to detail – examples include, but are not limited to, proofreading and spotting logistical issues
- Resourcefulness – candidate must have a “figure it out” mentality
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work well under pressure. Requires flexibility and adaptability in a competitive business and professional environment
- Ability to organize and prioritize work and meet tight deadlines
- Must be a self-starter and able to work independently with minimal supervision
- Strong computer skills
- Ability to establish immediate credibility with attorneys, staff and others
- An understanding of professional services marketing is a plus
- Familiarity with social media platforms is a plus
- Team player
- College degree required; Marketing, Public Relations, Communications, English or similar discipline preferred
- Proficiency in MS Office Suite and Adobe Acrobat
- 1-2 years professional experience, preferably with a law firm
- Demonstrates sound decision-making abilities as they relate to appropriately prioritizing projects and time management skills.
- Identifies and conceptualizes client development opportunities for practice areas.
- Fosters a proactive, service-oriented attitude.
- Maintains a balance of engagement with colleagues and lawyers, as appropriate, while taking ownership and responsibility for projects and initiatives.
- Proactively identifies areas for personal professional development.
- Demonstrates strong oral and written communications skills, particularly in dealing with interactions with lawyers.
- Non-smoking environment
- Available to work in the office 9:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday
- Must be available to work beyond regular hours when needed
- Must be able to work under tight deadlines and in stressful situations
